Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about the AZ ICE Gilbert Freestyle and Learn to Skate Programs. If you cannot find the answer you are looking for below, please feel free to email skating director Mark Fitzgerald by clicking here.

How old does my child need to be to skate?

ice-skating-summer-camps-for-nyc-kids-ice-hockey-and-figure-skating-programs_mediumThe answer to this is that there is no median age to participate! However, we do encourage young children (especially those 2-4 years old) to take 1 or 2 private lessons before joining group classes! A few private lessons insure they are confident enough to march on their own, and it creates a much more enjoyable experience for everyone!

Typically, we recommend that kids between the ages of 3-6 enter our Snowplow Sam program, and kids between 7-12 enter our Basic 1 program if they have never skated before. For teens, we have special Adult/Teen Classes available.

How Big Are Typical Classes at AZ ICE Gilbert?

learntoskatemiddle_mediumThe typical enrollment average for classes here is 10-12 kids, but we are allowed to have up to 15 kids per class per U.S. Figure Skating standards. However, if classes become that large, we will usually put more than one instructor to make sure the kids are getting enough attention. Please keep in mind that they are GROUP lessons, meaning that the more they participate, the more they will get out of the group. However, do not expect individual 1 on 1 attention during a group class. The instructors will do their best to work with all of the kids, but if 1 on 1 attention is what you need, you should consider scheduling private lessons. My Skater Wants to Take The Next Step. What Do I do?

If you have a skater that is interested in something more than just general recreation, you should look into taking some of our supplemental classes or even consider private lessons. Our coaching staff can take your child in the right direction, regardless of whether they want to compete, jump and spin, participate in ice dance or pair skating or even join a synchronized skating team. We’ve got it all.. Click here to inquire about private lessons.

Private lessons take place on our freestyle sessions. Please see the navigation link for freestyle sessions to learn more about how they work.

Does My Skater Need Their Own Skates to Participate in Classes?

freestyle_skates_women_smallThe answer to this question is two-fold. Skaters my rent skates at our facility, but please keep in mind that rental skates are of a lesser quality and fit than having your own skates. That said, if you are able to afford your own skates, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you purchase a pair. Please do not go to DICK’S SPORTING GOODS to purchase skates just because they are cheap! The only equipment your skater will need is a decent pair of skates!

If you would like to know more about purchasing your own skates, please email skating director Mark Fitzgerald by clicking here.

Are There Any Other Types Of Events Other Than Competitions Available?

skatingAbsolutely! AZ ICE Gilbert hosts ice shows throughout the year, with our biggest production being during the holiday season. This year’s show will be Nutcracker, and we will be putting our own ‘spin’ on it! The show will take place the weekend of Dec 12-13, and there will be multiple performances so there will be plenty of time for friends and family to come see your skaters perform! For more information on the Holiday Show at AZ ICE Gilbert, please see the Holiday Show Page link in our navigation on the top left of the page!
